EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville schools reported that nearly 7.4% of third-grade students risk being held back next year under the Arkansas LEARNS Act due to reading score requirements.   • Prairie Grove Junior High students explored quilt codes from the Underground Railroad in a hands-on art & history session led by teacher Tracie Ashley and a local quilting shop. The project connected past stories to classroom learning.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s midwinter aerial waterfowl survey from Dec 10 and Dec 15-23 showed that mallard counts in southwest areas were far below long term averages while ducks clustered in tight groups because icy conditions forced them to gather.   • The University of Arkansas Razorbacks signed four transfer players and welcomed a new offensive lineman commit yesterday in Fayetteville. The signings include safety Christian Harrison, kickoff specialist Braeden McAlister, long snapper Adam Johnston, kicker Max Gilbert, and offensive lineman Malachi Breland.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas men's basketball beat Tennessee 86-75 in an SEC opener at Fayetteville, with Knox + Ewin making key plays and coach Calipari noting improved rebounding and free throw accuracy helped secure the win.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas football signed sophomore Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert from the transfer portal on Sunday — he made 34 of 45 field goals and 118 extra points over two seasons, with two seasons of eligibility remaining.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Sacramento State long snapper Adam Johnston committed to Arkansas after an official visit Saturday. The 6-0, 215-pound Johnston (honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference 2025) will join special teams under coordinator Chad Lunsford with expectations of an immediate turnaround.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville’s Arkansas football team signed its first two transfers under coach Ryan Silverfield on Sunday, adding Cincinnati safety Christian Harrison and Georgia State kickoff specialist Braeden McAlister to strengthen the team.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas football has landed Memphis redshirt sophomore Malachi Breland, a 6-5, 340-pound offensive lineman who started every game at left guard for Memphis in 2025.
