COMMUNITY NEWS

  • For The Love launched its free weekly meal at Potter’s House at Jefferson (612 S. College Ave.) today, serving about 200 residents from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with plans to grow attendance as the program becomes established.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • The MLK Council will host its 30th annual Recommitment Weekend from Jan. 16-19 with events including a community festival at Crystal Bridges, a service project with free haircuts at 503 E. 15th Street, a youth breakfast and freedom march at TheatreSquared, and a vigil with Minniejean Brown-Trickey at Faulkner Performing Arts Center.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church will host a service at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 in its Parish Hall to celebrate the life of Andrew Kilgore (a local photographer known for his advocacy work). The event offers community members a chance to honor his inspiring legacy.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Fossil Cove Brewing announced that Frost Fest will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7, featuring performances by Joplin-based rock band Me Like Bees, Fayetteville-based group Gardensnakes, and an opening set by DJ J Seymore; a free afterparty at George’s Majestic Lounge will start at 8 p.m.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas Office for Sustainability announced the expansion of the Bicycle Library, growing the fleet from 15 to 20 bikes after winter break donations. U of A affiliates can rent a bike with safety gear for $25 per semester or $75 per year.  University of Arkansas
  • Students at U of A’s Experiential Learning Lab (ELL) at Bumpers College gain hands-on experience by developing real marketing and communications projects for local clients. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Four University of Arkansas students are drafting a constitutional amendment to secure a clean environment, working with Bentonville attorney Jennifer Standerfer on revised proposals. They will soon aim to collect nearly 91,000 signatures from 50 counties to protect Arkansas natural resources.  Arkansas Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House approved a three-year extension of premium tax credits that may help Arkansans avoid steep health insurance cost hikes as open enrollment ends Jan. 15. The measure now heads to the Senate, where differing views on affordable care could affect its passage.  5 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A federal report showed nearly 19% of Arkansans struggled with food access from 2022 to 2024, compared with a national average of 13.7%. Community groups and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders supported better food access and nutrition education—vital for families balancing basic needs.  Arkansas Times
  • Faculty and staff may now apply for Big Red's Buddies, a new pet therapy program set to launch in fall 2026 to boost campus wellness. Selected teams will complete a four-step application and 10-week training in May and June — applications close Feb. 16.  University of Arkansas

  • Fayetteville’s 28,055 sqft medical office building at 1695 E. Rainforest Road was sold for $15.3 million to an affiliate of Greensboro-based TM Medical Properties. The sale-leaseback includes 12 years of lease (at $545 per sqft), letting Dr. Josh Roller focus on his practice.  NWA Business Journal

  • Darius Acuff Jr. earned his fifth consecutive SEC Freshman Player of the Week award as he led the Razorbacks with 19.9 points and 5.8 assists. The Hogs now face South Carolina today at 8 p.m. in Fayetteville, aiming to improve their defense after a tough game against Auburn.  Fayetteville Flyer
