CULTURE NEWS

  • Danielle Hatch, a lecturer at the University of Arkansas School of Art, was named the first Arkansas artist to receive Creative Capital’s inaugural State of the Art Prize—carrying a $10,000 grant. She will use the funds to develop a collaborative public art installation with local high school students.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U of A students may register for a free two-day Youth Mental Health First Aid training on Wednesday, Jan. 28 and Thursday, Jan. 29 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in room 108 of the Home Economics Building (online prework of about two hours is required).  University of Arkansas
  • U of A law students will stage a peaceful demo today at 11:15 a.m. at the Leflar Law Center south entrance after the school canceled its offer to name Emily Suski dean. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three rescued African lions from Honduras arrived at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge near Eureka Springs on Jan. 15. The relocation was part of an international effort led by Honduran authorities and local partners to secure better care for these animals.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials and representatives from historically Black fraternities and sororities marked the 10th annual National Day of Racial Healing Tuesday, January 20, with Mayor Molly Rawn proclaiming the event and speakers urging continued efforts for equal treatment across the community.  4029 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pat Walker Health Center reminds everyone 6 months and older that they can still get a flu shot as the season runs through May with peak cases from December to February; the center successfully administered 148 shots on Oct. 31 and accepts appointments via its patient portal or at 479+575+4451.  University of Arkansas
  • Thrive Wellness Center will move to a custom facility on Harold St. in June for state-of-the-art spinal correction and wellness care. The center remains open at North Steele Blvd, and patients can book appointments now.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Huml Health, a Bentonville startup, uses Samsung smartwatch data to track vital signs and support patients in addiction recovery at treatment centers, supplementing self-reported assessments. The company will launch a post-treatment model this year so patients can continue monitoring recovery using their devices + smartphones.  NWA Business Journal

  • Fayetteville’s Hudson and Farmington’s McCollough were named players of the week by local sports officials. Their selection comes after Farmington’s girls basketball team trailed at halftime—a rare occurrence—highlighting their standout in-game performance.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • On Sunday, Jan. 18, the Razorbacks swept the Auburn Tigers in four rounds at Bud Walton Arena, winning contests on vault, bars, beams, and floor. The team will face the Southeastern Missouri State Redhawks at home on Friday, Jan. 23 as the meet is streamed live on the SEC network.  The Arkansas Traveler

  • Fayetteville head coach Jessica Phelan stepped away from coaching after 22 years at Fayetteville High School to focus on new opportunities. Her leadership built a top volleyball program (a legacy seen in the Lady Purple'Dogs' success).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • At Bulldog Arena Tuesday night, the boys won 61+40 after a strong third-quarter run, while the girls lost 59+53 when Bentonville West secured a final lead with a key three-pointer. Both contests showcased local sports talent in a competitive outing.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
