  • Northwest Arkansas shelters, including in Fayetteville, are preparing for a prolonged winter storm that will bring 6 — 12 inches of snow and extreme cold starting Friday, and the Collaborative Response for Extreme Weather network will offer warm shelters, meals and supplies through Tuesday.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • HBO's documentary (Armed Only With a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud) about the slain Arkansas reporter was nominated for an Oscar this morning in the Documentary Short Film category; it is co-directed by his brother Craig and will compete on March 15.  Arkansas Times
  • The Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History at the University of Arkansas launched a project to preserve veterans' stories from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars (2001-2021).   • University of Arkansas students are preparing for a snowy weekend by stocking up on winter essentials and planning outdoor fun across campus; classes will end early at 3 p.m. to adjust to the cold conditions — many face long lines at stores while choosing between practical and stylish gear.  5 News
  • The Graduate Professional Student Congress Research Council is asking faculty and postdocs to volunteer as reviewers for an upcoming research grant cycle. Volunteers must register by Feb. 15 (using the online form) to support fair evaluations that strengthen graduate research projects.  University of Arkansas

  • The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team lost 76-66 at Walton Arena on Thursday after a 10-minute second-quarter collapse brought their SEC start to 0-6; they will face No. 4 Texas at 3 p.m. Sunday to avoid an outright worst start.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
