COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People gathered at the intersection of College Avenue and North Street on Sunday night to hold a candlelight vigil honoring Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and union member. Organizers said the event was part of nationwide vigils that provided a quiet space for mourning.  4029 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Guitarist and composer Denin Slage-Koch will debut his new suite, 'Twang: Scenes from East Tennessee' at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall — he will also host a public jazz masterclass at 3 p.m. in room 328 of the Billingsley Music Building.  University of Arkansas
  • John Jeter of Fort Smith and Jesse Welles of Ozark received Grammy nominations when they attended the awards on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles; Jeter was up for best Classical Instrumental Solo and Welles was nominated in four categories (including best Folk Album).  5 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Arkansas recorded $291.1 million in medical marijuana sales in 2025 + the Department of Finance and Administration noted increased demand statewide. The record marks continued growth in the state market.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erika Almenara, director of the Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Program, was awarded the School of Art Interdisciplinary Faculty Fellowship. She will spend four weeks in Lima, Peru researching how art can heal incarcerated women from Shining Path - her findings will inform a new monograph and university courses.  University of Arkansas
  • Chancellor Charles Robinson and Provost Indrajeet Chaubey will host two coffee events in Mullins Library to discuss faculty support. The sessions are set for Friday, Feb. 13 (9:30 to 10:30 a.m.) and Wednesday, Feb. 25 (10 to 11 a.m.) with registration due by 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.  University of Arkansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A barred owl in Fayetteville recovered after a rare feather transplant procedure, following severe injuries from fishing line entanglement at Lake Fayetteville. Wildlife experts (from Northsong Wild Bird Rehabilitation) say the owl will be released back into the wild soon and urge residents to properly dispose of fishing line.  5 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Hillcrest Holdings LLC, managed by Gary Nichols, has bought nearly 70,000 sqft of mixed-use buildings along Fayetteville Square and North College Ave for $17.1 million; the deal, which costs $247 per sqft, was aided by a three-year $27.8 million loan from Legacy National Bank + Allegiance Title handled the paperwork.  NWA Business Journal

  • Local high school basketball games are scheduled for today, including a matchup with Fayetteville at Rogers Heritage and several contests across the region. The schedule is subject to change (updates pending team confirmations).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The No. 15 Arkansas men’s basketball team lost to Kentucky 85 to 77 at Walton Arena Saturday night. Coach Calipari said Kentucky played with more desperation and the Razorbacks will regroup ahead of their next game Saturday at Mississippi State.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas football announced Lucas Possenti, a Temple transfer offensive lineman, as a preferred walk-on on Sunday — he chose Arkansas over offers from Stetson and Oklahoma State and will enroll this summer.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas women's basketball played against No. 18 Kentucky at Bud Walton Arena on Sunday, Feb. 1. The Razorbacks led 11 to 8 and officials paused play for a media timeout after a key action by Emily Robinson.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
