EDUCATION NEWS

  • Principal Todd Loftin of Central Junior High School in Springdale and third-grade teacher April Williamson of Saint Joseph Catholic School in Fayetteville were nominated for the Life Changer of the Year award (which offers a $10,000 prize for the winner plus an equal prize for the district) from a nationwide pool that includes 755 nominees this year. A selection committee of past winners and higher education professionals will soon choose one main winner and 16 other educators for various cash prizes, with more than 8,000 nominees recognized since 2011.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A green ash tree at Walker Park was named the ninth Amazing Tree of Fayetteville after residents chose it for its unique bend and size—standing about 25 feet tall with a 24-inch trunk. Mayor Molly Rawn will unveil its plaque on April 25 at 6 p.m. near the intersection of S. Block Avenue and E. 13th Street in a ceremony celebrating Fayetteville’s eight-year Amazing Trees program.  City of Fayetteville

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Molly Rawn gave her first State of the City address at the Fayetteville City Council meeting on March 18, saying she will cut permit approval time by one-third to help address the housing crisis. She also announced plans for new public schools, expanding the community center and improving water systems—moves that underline stronger ties with the University and a commitment to a better Fayetteville.  The Arkansas Traveler

SPORTS NEWS

  • Forward Adou Thiero will be available for Arkansas’ NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game against Texas Tech on Thursday in San Francisco after coach John Calipari — who spoke on the Pat McAfee Show — announced his return on Tuesday. Thiero missed eight games because of a knee injury and his reentry will add depth to the Razorbacks’ rotation.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek — speaking after Musick’s audition on Nov. 21 — introduced Kelsi Musick as the new head coach for the women’s basketball team, making her the program’s 10th coach. Musick, known for her high-octane offense at Oral Roberts, will rebuild the team with strong administrative backing and fan support as staff and roster decisions soon follow.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
