- ➤ University of Arkansas doctoral candidate Thomas McKean developed a nanofiltration membrane that removes 99% of the algae toxin microcystins from water, and discussions with the city are underway to test the filter at Lake Fayetteville. He will work to scale the technology after he graduates in December—further research is in progress to refine its use in cleaning water during harmful algal blooms.
