Good morning, Fayetteville. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of April.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 19th International Architecture Biennale in Venice will open an exhibition called 'Porch: An Architecture of Generosity' on May 10 to show how porches help bring people together. University of Arkansas dean Peter B. MacKeith and Crystal Bridges executive director Rod Bigelow lead the project—highlighting a local tie with the Ozark Natural Foods Co-Op porch in Fayetteville.  Arkansas Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U of A received a $5 million gift from The Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation — joining the Leaders of Arkansas Founders’ Circle — to support the Land of Opportunity Scholarship endowment for students across all 75 counties. This contribution strengthens educational access and underscores the foundation’s ongoing commitment to the university.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At their spring meeting on Wednesday at the Fayetteville Public Library, the Northwest Arkansas Council discussed a shared plan for handling rapid growth and hired DPZ CoDesign to study zoning changes for housing, traffic, and infrastructure. The report will be released in the first quarter next year—public input is planned for the third quarter to help guide future actions.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Gov. Sarah Sanders vetoed a bill on Wednesday evening that would have allowed drive-thru windows at medical marijuana dispensaries because it would have expanded access to usable marijuana. The bill passed by narrow margins in both legislative chambers but can be overridden with a simple majority vote—making the veto largely symbolic.  Arkansas Times
  • The Arkansas House of Representatives approved a resolution Wednesday that would refer a proposed constitutional amendment to voters for the creation of regional economic development districts. The measure now sends the proposal to the next step for voter decision.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • On Wednesday, Fayetteville's Housing Crisis Task Force heard from member Dustin McGowan, who presented a draft Housing Action Plan with short, mid, and long range goals to support the unhoused and those with limited incomes. The plan will be posted for public input as the group meets again on May 21 ahead of presenting recommendations to City Council on June 10.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Legislature narrowly passed Senate Bill 437—known as the Arkansas Wind Development Act—and it now awaits Governor Sanders's signature as it sets strict permit and study rules for new wind energy projects statewide. Developers and landowners say the act may slow future project approvals if it takes effect.  Arkansas Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pat Walker Health Center added a new Med Kwik vending machine at its southeast entrance on Maple and Garland that supplies NARCAN and fentanyl harm prevention kits to the U of A community. The machine is available 24/7 (via a simple zip code and voucher process) and is part of Griffin's One Pill Can Kill initiative (funded by opioid abatement funds).  University of Arkansas
