  • On Saturday, Apr. 18, Cub Scouts from seven local packs raced wooden Pinewood Derby cars at Bella Vista First United Methodist Church, where participants built cars from wood kits and trophies and medals were awarded to the top finishers.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • U of A startups won over $40,000 at the 25th Arkansas Governor’s Cup in Little Rock (April 14-15). Altaris MedTech, with a spray-based strep test, and Bubby Band, developing a wearable safety system for toddlers, led the awards from a $141,000 prize pool.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Assistant professor Donyi Wang at the University of Arkansas received a $511,074 NSF CAREER award to develop autonomous robotics for handling soft foods (using hyperspectral sensors and imitation learning) to improve manufacturing methods over the next five years.  University of Arkansas
  • Tyson Foods has donated 100,000 dollars to the University of Arkansas to support transfer students in its 3+1 Poultry Science Transfer Program. The scholarship will cover tuition and outreach for final-year students from partner schools and ease financial barriers in Arkansas' growing poultry industry.  University of Arkansas
  • U of A launched a new student well-being website that organizes support services into two sections, "I Need" and "I Want." The site helps students quickly find emergency and academic resources and is now integrated into Blackboard.  University of Arkansas
  • Students on campus are invited to join a free Wikipedia edit-a-thon at Mullins Library Event Space, where librarians guide article edits and serve free food and drinks. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 21) and is hosted by U of A Libraries in partnership with the Honors College.  University of Arkansas
  • UARK Speech and Debate placed second in the Scholastic Sweepstakes at the IPDA National Tournament held at Middle Tennessee State University from April 9 to 13. The record-setting team won 248 awards this season and coach Hannah Morris was named Bennett Strange Coach of the Year.  University of Arkansas
  • The Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center will host Dr. Patience Okoto from U of A at 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 in CHEM 0144 to introduce LC-MS/QTOF metabolomics and show the Bioenergetics Core support for metabolic research + pizza and beverages will be served with a Zoom option.  University of Arkansas
  • Undergraduate students from the U of A Communication Sciences and Disorders program presented research on AAC devices, bilingual intervention, and mentoring children at the ArkSHA Convention — they received practical feedback from speech therapy professionals to boost their skills for future study.  University of Arkansas
  • University Recreation + Wellness hosted its annual End of Year celebration on Thursday, April 16 at the HPER Building, recognizing over 300 student employees for academic and job achievements, including UREC Aces and the Craig Edmonston award recipients.
