COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Spark Foundation will host its annual Cow Paddy Run on May 16 at Gulley Park with a 5K race and a 1K fun run starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit physical education programs in local schools.  Fayetteville Flyer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fayetteville banker Hayden McIlroy died on Sunday, April 19. He led McIlroy Bank — established in 1871 — and supported local institutions, leaving a lasting impact on the community.  NWA Business Journal
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods will open its first Dick’s House of Sport in Arkansas as part of the 37-acre Concord Commons development in Lowell. The two-story, 120,000 sqft store will open in March 2028, with a groundbreaking set for 10 a.m. April 30 (at Concord Street and West Pleasant Grove Road).  NWA Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three newly painted utility boxes from Fayetteville’s Utility Box Art Program are now on display, featuring designs by local artists. The installations include a stained glass — style panel at College and North, a mandala motif at College and Lafayette, and apple blossoms at Dickson and West near the Walton Arts Center.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 100 school leaders met for the College of Education and Health Professions School Leadership Summit in Northwest Arkansas to share insights on improving leadership and school transformation. Led by Dean Emeritus Reed Greenwood, the event featured keynote talks, panel discussions, and group sessions on building trust & strategic thinking.  University of Arkansas
  • University of Arkansas, Memphis, Mississippi and Tennessee Health Science Center formed the Mid-South AI Research Consortium today to pool AI research to boost advances in transportation, energy, and computing.   • The U of A was named a Gilman Program top school after 285 students (since 2011) earned scholarships to study abroad; coordinator Katie Sabo (Gilman Advisor Ambassador) has boosted applications that help students gain job-ready skills and a broader view of the world.  University of Arkansas
  • University of Arkansas student leaders launched the first campus-wide food insecurity study in nearly a decade to assess the impact of rising tuition and inflation on campus meals, and the survey begun last summer will guide new meal swipe & support programs.  The Arkansas Traveler

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Arkansas officials will unveil a new solar facility (25-acre) at 8200 Wedington Drive in west Fayetteville on Wednesday, April 22. The project will provide about 6.3% of the main campus's electricity needs and support the goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.  NWA Business Journal

  • The University of Arkansas launched the AR-COMPASS dashboard to reveal health data from a survey of 10,000 Arkansans. Niño will host a webinar on May 30 at 1 p.m. (with CAP Index expertise) to explain how the tool guides community health decisions.  University of Arkansas
  • Officials urge drivers to put phones down during Arkansas’ Distracted Driving Awareness Month following data showing over 3,200 deaths in 2024; current laws ban phone use for drivers under 18 and allow hands-free use only for drivers 18 to 21.  5 News

  • Theresa Guenther, 94, still climbs Pinnacle Mountain with neighbor & longtime companion Christophe Block, having started her hikes as a child. She says her secret is to stay active and enjoy nature, and they plan future climbs.  5 News

  • Ron Roberts, Arkansas’ new defensive coordinator, said Monday during spring practice briefings that he aims to identify 22 game-ready players and plans to add to the 17-18 he trusts as the defense grows stronger before fall camp in Fayetteville.
