COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The completed eastern section of Maple Street now offers an improved bike lane, safer crosswalks, and new greenspace for campus commuters and pedestrians. FAMA and city officials will begin phase two construction from Garland to Leverett in May with detour and road closure updates coming as summer nears.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Graphic Design program at U of A will offer Introduction to Graphic Design for Non-Majors this fall 2026. The three-credit course meets 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Studio + Design Center and welcomes all undergraduates without prior design experience.  University of Arkansas
  • Dr. Rania Mahmoud will offer a fall semester class on Arab Cinema in the CLCS department, teaching the history of Egyptian film that spread to 22 Arab countries and inviting students to explore non-Western cinema through lively discussions (CLCS 5750V-003, ARAB 41003-001, MEST 4003-004).  University of Arkansas
  • Professor Thomas Kippenbrock received the 2026 Arkansas Nursing Legacy Award and clinical instructor Allison Davis earned the 40 Nurse Leaders Under 40 Award at an event held on April 20 by the Arkansas Center for Nursing, recognizing their contributions to nursing education and care.  University of Arkansas
  • The U of A Leave Green donation program begins Thursday at on-campus residence halls—students can drop off gently used items until May 8 to support local groups like Habitat for Humanity and Potter's House.  University of Arkansas
  • Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center will host Dr. Kevin Murach for a seminar on the role of oncogene MYC in skeletal muscle adaptation. It is set for 12:55 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29 in CHEM 0144 — pizza and beverages will be served, and remote access is available via Zoom.  University of Arkansas
  • Faculty and U of A researchers led an immersive VR workshop at the Black Wall Street HBCU + AI Conference held Friday and Saturday, where curated VR experiences (such as 1,000 Cut Journey and Traveling While Black) sparked student discussions on digital storytelling and immersive learning.  University of Arkansas
  • The Fayetteville School Board approved a revised salary schedule that will raise wages for district staff, setting minimum teacher pay at $55,000 next school year. The decision will take effect when the new school term begins.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Design Camp at the Fay Jones School invites students to explore architecture, landscape, and interior design through hands-on projects. Sessions will run June 15-19 and June 22-26 at the U of A campus for grades 9-12 (with a two-week advanced camp for seniors) while registration runs until May 18.  University of Arkansas
  • A new open-access book examines how honors colleges transform public universities and highlights U of A Honors College as a national leader. The volume — drawing on insights from over 200 public institutions — will be published this April.  University of Arkansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • UofA’s Sarah Tonkin received a nearly $700,000 NIH grant to study how depression affects smoking cessation by comparing mobile app interventions among smokers with and without depression (research set to start soon), which may improve treatment approaches.  University of Arkansas

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UCA Bears lost 7-3 to North Alabama in nine innings Sunday at Shock Stadium, yet they maintained their conference lead over Eastern Kentucky while gearing up for a three-game series with Lipscomb.
