COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Office for Sustainability is partnering with University Housing for the Spring Bike Drive to collect unwanted bicycles from students, with on-campus residents calling (479) 575-3715 for a pickup and off-campus donors dropping bikes off at 238 N. Harmon Ave. during office hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; bikes will be collected from today until May 9.  University of Arkansas

CULTURE NEWS

  • A screening of the award-winning documentary film A Woman on the Outside will be held on May 4 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville Public Library’s Walker Community Room at 401 W. Mountain St — a virtual Q&A with Kristal Bush will begin at 3:30 p.m. — light refreshments will be served and admission is free.  University of Arkansas

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Researchers at the U of A Division of Agriculture found that malted rice can lower beer production costs by 2% to 12% and cut land use, a change that may boost local rice demand as exports have dropped 7% over 15 years. The study published in Nature partner journal Sustainable Agriculture shows this old process can make gluten-free beer with fewer extra steps—helping small brewers use Arkansas rice—while keeping costs down.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 16, Todd Cleveland, Bernadette Moore & Julie Rogers were honored at the Geren-Koski Awards reception for their commitment to graduate education at the University of Arkansas; Cleveland received the Outstanding Faculty Award, Moore the Outstanding Staff Award, and Rogers the Outstanding GSIE Staff Award along with monetary prizes and plaques.  University of Arkansas
  • Arda Tuhanioglu and Sumanjot Kaur—doctoral food science students at U of A—won national awards from Phi Tau Sigma on April 2 for their academic and research efforts. Tuhanioglu received a $1,000 scholarship and Kaur won first place in the Speedy Science competition.  University of Arkansas
  • Coleman Warren, a 2022 U of A graduate and Rhodes Scholar, will be the featured speaker at the University of Arkansas spring commencement ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 10 in Bud Walton Arena — more than 5,600 graduates will be celebrated and Richard 'Rick' Massey will receive an honorary doctorate.  University of Arkansas
  • Three U of A students — Abhinav Komanduri — Jared Noel — and Ian Popp were awarded the Goldwater Scholarship and will each receive $7,500 to support their research in science and math. Their win brings the university’s total to 67 Goldwater Scholars since the award was established.  University of Arkansas
  • Fayetteville High School honors biology teacher Matt Holden was chosen as a 2025 science communication fellow and will join a 21 day expedition aboard Nautilus from July 27 to Aug. 17 to explore deep sea environments near the Marshall Islands — he will host live interactions connecting the ship to shore with classrooms and community groups. Holden said the trip will bring real-world science into his lessons and offer students firsthand insights into ocean exploration.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. the Chancellor's Commission on Women at U of A will honor five honorees—including Josey Duncan, Michelle Gray, Meredith Neville-Shepard, Myrlinda Soedjede and Romona West—for advancing an inclusive campus environment in room 349 of the Cordia Harrington Center for Excellence.  University of Arkansas
  • Professor Ngan Le from U of A is teaching a robot arm to recognize objects in any position and to help robots move through new spaces. She is also building a computer system that checks chicken weight and behavior for the poultry industry — work that has earned national grants and support from industry partners.  University of Arkansas
