  • The Arkansas Insect Festival returns with free, family-friendly exhibits and live critter encounters on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Center (1335 W. Knapp Dr.) in Fayetteville.  University of Arkansas

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brazilian-American cellist Gabriel Martins joins the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra this weekend at the Robinson Center. He will perform Haydn’s restored Cello Concerto in C and Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m.  Arkansas Times
  • Live Nation is offering $30 lawn tickets through May 5 to concerts at Walmart AMP in Rogers and select shows at The Hall and Simmons Bank Arena (Summer of Live promotion).  Arkansas Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Third-year law student Angela Comeaux of the U of A School of Law won the ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development's legal writing contest on Friday, May 1st, earning a cash prize, an invitation to the annual meeting in Washington, D.C., and potential publication. Her award spotlights her focus on improving state landlord-tenant law.  University of Arkansas
  • U of A graduate Michael Wood led Boeing’s engineering team on the Artemis rocket that carried astronauts in April and is now establishing a new engineering scholarship for local high school graduates. His career, which started here and included work on the International Space Station, inspires future Arkansas STEM talent (a true local success story).  University of Arkansas
  • State Sen. Dan Sullivan introduced three higher education funding bills and then withdrew proposals aimed at UA Fayetteville’s King Fahd Center and UA-Little Rock’s online law program as he plans to hold hearings on funding and curriculum review (he also will examine state support for a Middle East Studies group).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maple Street will close from Garland Avenue past Leverett Avenue for a summer mobility project beginning Monday, May 11, reopening by fall — Stadium Drive will also close from Meadow Street to the garage entrance until early August with detour options provided.  University of Arkansas
  • County planners approved a treatment facility in Prairie Grove on Thursday that could house up to 16 teen girls. The decision supports community health needs and is expected to expand local residential care options.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville riders will see new bus changes as ORT adds a second bus on College Avenue this May for 30-minute service, and in August Razorback Transit—to offer extended weekday and Saturday hours—will take over the route while south Fayetteville sees doubled ORT service.  Fayetteville Flyer
