Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 10th of May.
Good morning, Fayetteville.
The Ozark Natural Science Center will host Call of the Wild at Lake Fayetteville on May 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. where families can join guided hikes, nature games, live music, and enjoy meals with vegan and gluten-free options.
A donation-based Ride for the Wild will run from 2 to 4 p.m. — funds support outdoor education — and the event offers a full day of outdoor fun.
Faux L’Beaux — a Fayetteville-based drag queen — played a key role in designing several outfits for Onya Nurve, who will perform at Club Sway on May 14 after winning RuPaul’s Drag Race.
She also adjusted a look from an earlier University of Arkansas show to work with new tour padding.
Apple Seeds Teaching Farm in Gulley Park runs a program where kids learn to cook healthy farm-to-table meals and understand nutrition.
The program includes a Kids’ Table Summer Camp from June 2 to August 1 that runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. per session at $205 and offers volunteer opportunities on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Maple Street between Leverett & Gregg avenues will close for nearly three months starting May 12 and run through early August as Phase 1 of a 33.5 million dollar safety project begins.
The project, funded by a federal grant with matching funds from the city & University of Arkansas, will add crosswalks, new driving lanes, greenspace, sidewalks and a bike lane to improve road safety and access.
On Friday, Charleston beat Providence Academy 10-0 with a no-hitter by Bryson Wibbing and three runs driven in by Kelton Moreton—placing them in the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament championship as they prepare to face top seed Greenland at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Greenland secured an extra-inning win over Booneville—while Providence Academy meets Booneville for third place at noon.
Senior first baseman Bri Ellis was named SEC player of the year on Friday by the University of Arkansas—joining KB Sides as the only other Arkansas player to win the honor—and she ended the season with a .492 batting average, 26 home runs and strong on-base numbers.
