CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayetteville held its first Sunday Mass after Pope Leo XIV was elected on Thursday, and church members shared their joy about hearing his sermons in English and his U.S. background — many saying his leadership will bring positive change. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Desiree Taggard was hired as the university's new senior director of procurement and will lead campus operations—she will guide departments on purchasing strategies and supplier contracts using her prior experience at UA Little Rock, the Arkansas School for Math, Science and the Arts, and the Department of Parks and Tourism.  University of Arkansas
  • The U of A awarded the Hugh T. Henry Memorial Scholarship for 2024-25 to three MPA students, Andrew Guegan, Annette Nyoni & Domingo A. Feliz Carela, in recognition of their academic achievement & commitment to public service.  University of Arkansas
  • On April 24, the Industrial Engineering Department honored Maryam Aghamohammad, Nick Uhorchak, and Caleb Mallett at a banquet at Fayetteville Town Center — they received top awards and scholarships totaling $251,791 for their academic and research achievements.  University of Arkansas
  • Eighty-seven faculty and staff at the College of Education and Health Professions were honored with WE CARE Rounds of Applause awards at a breakfast organized by Dean Kate Mamiseishvili’s office under the college's WE CARE plan—Jackie Couture and Bonnie King received recognition for acts of care in supporting students and colleagues—emphasizing the college’s commitment to a culture of recognition.  University of Arkansas
  • University staff and spouses will join the Staff Appreciation Picnic on May 14 at 1021 Food Hall (formerly Brough Commons at the corner of Dickson Street and Garland Avenue) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Natural Hearing Centers will offer hearing tests and free parking is available from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  University of Arkansas
  • Jon and Linda Fricke have created the Fricke Family Endowed Scholarship with a $25,000 gift to support UREC student employees who show financial need and maintain a 2.0 GPA—Joe Fiorenza became the first recipient during a recent Honors and Awards Celebration. The scholarship will be awarded annually by the Division of Student Affairs to assist students working with University Recreation and Wellness.  University of Arkansas
  • Yakeshia Jenkins was named employee of the quarter by U of A Global Campus for her work on a new Slate system to improve non-credit education—she used her coding skills to boost registration, website functions and reporting. She accepted the award at an October staff meeting and her efforts have been praised by colleagues.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Over 65 experts from government, national labs and industry met at U of A to plan for funding and research on critical infrastructure security in the era of artificial intelligence — a joint effort by U of A, George Mason University and the University of North Dakota that addressed issues like supply chain software vulnerabilities and advanced gunshot detection. The meeting supported the center’s strategy to secure national assets as NSF funding helps build a network of industry partners.  University of Arkansas
