CULTURE NEWS

  • Route 66 turns 100 this year, reflecting on its role in sparking local travel and shaping community culture—despite missing the state's northwest corner by 23 miles. The iconic highway remains a symbol of adventure that continues to inspire residents.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Rapper Freddie Gibbs will headline a show at Ozark Music Hall in Fayetteville on Saturday, May 16 at 7 p.m. The gig — with support from Nourished By Time — marks his return to The Natural State since 2014.  Arkansas Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville Public Library will host its annual summer reading kickoff Saturday, May 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature hands-on activities by local groups + a Dino Disco dance and Inspyral Circus performance from 1 to 2 p.m.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • U of A is seeking student volunteers for a 45-minute study on how the built environment affects mood (participants will be randomly assigned to an office, outdoor lawn, or campus garden) and will earn a $15 Walmart gift card.  University of Arkansas

SPORTS NEWS

  • UA Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek pre-announced cutting the men’s and women’s tennis programs nearly a month before the final decision on April 24. The move saved $2.5 million a year to support 17 other sports programs.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas Razorbacks won two games against Oklahoma Friday and Saturday but fell 15–7 on Sunday. They will play Kentucky Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Proud Park (Lexington).  Fayetteville Flyer
