ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On May 14, a fatal accident on U.S. 412 in Siloam Springs left 84-year-old Peggy Nelson dead and three others injured when her Chevrolet Traverse failed to yield and was hit by a Freightliner truck that struck another vehicle—resulting in hours of backed up traffic as officers cleared the scene. - ➤ The Department of Geosciences at the U of A will award $153,900 in scholarships to 26 undergraduates and 33 graduate students in the 2025-26 academic year—33 endowed awards honor faculty and alumni like Walt Manger and Dan Gabor. - ➤ Charles Maxwell, a U of A professor known for his strong work in swine nutrition and teaching, died on May 12 at 83—his nearly 60-year career left a big mark on research and classes. - ➤ The City of Fayetteville will launch its Community Forester program this June to help residents 16 and up learn how to care for trees — the free program offers three levels with classes at the Fayetteville Public Library and Lower Ramble. - ➤ The City Council voted 3-4 on Tuesday to reject a proposed seven-story, 185-unit student housing project on Dickson Street that would have included commercial space and faced over 2,500 public signatures, and the Council also approved a petition to ask the Arkansas Public Service Commission to review Southwestern Electric Power’s rate increase request—which could add about $30.46 to a typical residential bill.
