  • Northwest Arkansas outdoor events cater to nature lovers. Ponca Nature Center hosts a free geology class Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., Prairie Creek Park holds a veteran bass tournament Saturday at 5:45 a.m., and a boater education class takes place June 20.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Bike Route closed this month after four years under Specialized ownership and now displays a sign directing customers to an upcoming Erik’s Bike Shop at 1046 E. Stearns St. The new shop, Erik’s first in Arkansas, is expected to open in late June.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Fayetteville-based architecture firm modus studio promoted several staff, released a new logo, and updated its website Monday, June 1 — marking its interior practice growth and Kiara Gilmore’s 10th anniversary while earning recent design awards.  NWA Business Journal

  • Alan Chow—former U of A professor—will perform a free piano recital on Friday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall as a renowned Steinway artist.  University of Arkansas

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported average gasoline prices in Arkansas dropped to $3.89 per gallon on June 1, down more than 13 cents from the previous week. Falling oil prices likely drove the drop though prices remain higher than last month—adding some relief for local drivers.  5 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School Board approved free breakfasts and lunches for students at Asbell Elementary and ALLPS School of Innovation starting this fall — the program will use the Community Eligibility Provision and be recertified every four years.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, May 28, Arkansas and Nebraska set a WCWS Opening Day record with 1.4 million ESPN viewers + Nebraska won 5-3 on Ava Kuszak's walk-off home run with 12,605 fans attending at Devon Park.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • On Monday, coach Chris Brooks finalized his gymnastics staff by hiring Zan Jones and promoting assistants Kyla Ross and Catelyn Branson to associate head coaches; Jones comes from Texas Woman’s University (earning three national assistant coaching awards) and aims to strengthen the program.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
