COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fayetteville’s free summer movie nights return this month with two series — Movies in the Parks and Dive-in Movies — offering screenings for all ages in city parks. Movies in the Parks will show films like Jumanji on June 20 and Shrek on July 11, while Dive-in Movies at Wilson Park pool will screen Moana 2 on June 27 and A Minecraft Movie on July 18 with tickets at $1 in advance or $2 at the door.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • On Saturday, June 14 from 2-6 p.m., Ozark Natural Foods will host a local vendor fair in Fayetteville where local food, arts, crafts and music will be showcased. Local farmers, producers and artists will share their products and stories + the event is free and open to the public.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • The Mount Sequoyah Overlook reopened May 22 after a $160,000 renovation that added an observation deck, new benches, landscaping plus new signs. The project was funded by grants including one from the Walton Family Foundation plus built by local contractor Natural State Treehouses to create a welcoming event space.  NWA Business Journal

  • Locals in downtown Fayetteville will soon enjoy a new tea shop as Avalon Gurel and Alyssa Stockland prepare to open Fayetteville Tea House at 315 W. Center Street near the public library— the cafe will offer loose leaf teas, baked goods from local bakers, and event space, and it plans to debut later this summer before UA students return.  Fayetteville Flyer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Schola Cantorum performed in the world premiere of FLOCK—a dance and music work by the vertical dance company Bandaloop—at the Momentary in Bentonville. The students, led by director Stephen Caldwell, sang in four parts that mixed planned with improvised music by Destani Wolf and Ben Juodvalkis, impressing many in the audience.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. David Whitaker (a longtime Fayetteville resident and U.S. Air Force veteran) announced he will run for re-election in Arkansas House District 22 in 2026. He said he will focus on public education, affordable housing, and health care access while opposing efforts to undo Medicaid Expansion.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Protect AR Rights will try again next week to get its ballot title for a direct democracy amendment approved after its first attempt was rejected on June 2, as attorneys noted state law makes it hard to draft a simple title—one that meets the eighth-grade reading requirement—while a spokesperson for the attorney general said the review will follow the law.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville will close its Transfer Station at 1560 S. Happy Hollow Rd. from June 16 through June 22 for repairs that include metal push wall replacement, electrical relocation, and concrete work outside the pit—trash, recycling, and yard waste pick-up services will continue while residents use alternative sites at Boston Mountain Solid Waste, Eco-Vista landfill, or CARDS Transfer Station.  City of Fayetteville
  • Councilwoman Sarah Moore will propose a Safe Camping Initiative at the June 17 City Council meeting to address homelessness after the removal of unsheltered people from the University of Arkansas property. The plan reallocates $630,000 from leftover funds to provide tents, a bathroom and shower facility, staffing, food and trash disposal at the Walker property — additional housing measures will also be discussed.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
