  • Onyx Coffee Lab has opened a three-story café and chocolate factory in a renovated historic building in downtown Springdale—marking a homecoming for founders Jon and Andrea Allen after more than a decade in the business. The company plans to expand with new locations at Northwest Arkansas National Airport and downtown Fayetteville—bringing its award-winning coffee and innovative chocolate to more local fans.  Arkansas Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The review of 'Materialists' said the film blends a light romantic comedy with realistic drama as it follows Lucy, a high-end matchmaker played by Dakota Johnson, who faces conflict between a struggling actor and a charming millionaire while a dark subplot hints at abuse; it opened in theaters on June 13. The film stars Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans and challenges typical rom-com styles + prompts viewers to consider the transactional side of relationships.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Sidecar Cocktail Lounge opened on May 4 on College Ave and is run by local owners Reese Roberts, Corey McCain and Trey Fincher who designed the refined dive bar to feel like home—featuring vinyl music, creative cocktails linked to song titles and decor that honors Fayetteville’s past.  The Free Weekly
  • Historic Cane Hill Gallery is displaying 'Confluence: The Ozark Mountains, Buffalo River, and New York City', a collection of oil paintings by Wendel Norton, until July 26 — the exhibit includes an outdoor painting meetup on Saturday and free admission during gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  The Free Weekly
  • Fenix Arts at Mount Sequoyah Center in Fayetteville opened the 'Elder' exhibit honoring queer expression across generations with works from 25 visual artists and 20 writers curated by Arden Carlson and Pat Hennon. The free exhibit runs through July 6 and features sculptures, paintings, and sound installations— it also accompanies a Bee Balm Arkansas Pride Poetry Reading on June 12.  The Free Weekly
  • Fayetteville’s punk band the Phlegms will release their first full-length album, Gulp!, on Friday, June 27 while also announcing an East Coast tour and collaborating with Lost Forty Brewing on a new beer—marking a major step forward for the band.  The Free Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Fayetteville School Board approved a guaranteed maximum price of $6,252,353 for the early concrete package at the new Woodland Junior High during a special meeting Wednesday — board leaders said the decision will keep the project on schedule as Nabholz Construction finalizes cost estimates for other project parts.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East North Street, from North College Avenue to Mission Boulevard, will be closed beginning Tuesday for annual road work that will shut both lanes to through traffic from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local drivers can use other routes as the Transportation Division repairs and overlays the asphalt — work is expected to continue until June 27 and may be delayed by weather.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Organizers began a petition drive Friday at the Stonebreaker Hotel in Fayetteville for a constitutional amendment to protect voting rights — the coalition must collect 90,704 registered voter signatures by July 3 next year to meet new petition requirements.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
