COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Fayetteville will host the Dickson Street Mile on Saturday, July 26 beginning at 7 a.m. Participants will get a free T-shirt & medal while dogs in the special mile receive a bandana, and registration stays open until July 25.  4029 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, July 11, Fayetteville will host several cultural events—Walker Park will show a free screening of Shrek at 8:30 p.m., Mount Sequoyah will open its creative spaces exhibition at 6 p.m., and Walton Arts Center will run its paid 23rd annual Art of Wine Fundraiser from 8 to 11 p.m. Additional free film screenings for National Treasure on July 25 and E.T. on August 22 will take place at Lewis Park.  4029 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marcia Overby retires from the University of Arkansas after 40 years of service as associate vice chancellor for administration and director of operations + her final day is today. She supported five chancellors over decades + her work provided vital institutional knowledge that guided the university’s growth.  University of Arkansas
  • Graduate student Michaelmary Chukwu has earned praise for his work on urban park accessibility and flood risk assessment in geosciences—his research has appeared in top journals. This fall he will begin Ph.D. studies at the University of Maryland to explore GeoAI methods for spatial data science.  University of Arkansas
  • Engineering Career Connections honored staff, faculty and employers for helping students build career skills. The awards went to Crafton Tull as Small Employer and Garver as Large Employer along with individual honors for Gayle Taylor, Sarah Hernandez, Suman Mitra and Terry Howell—recognizing their role in guiding students from class to internships.  University of Arkansas
  • On June 18, the UA System Division of Agriculture communications team won six awards from the Association for Communication Excellence for its work on agricultural research and extension programs. The awards were presented at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee—gold awards were given for a video on the Northeast Rice Research Center grand opening and a monthly research newsletter while bronze awards recognized other media pieces.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Records show that Collier Drug Store's electronic signs have been at the center of a year-long dispute with local officials discussing how to reach compliance. Representatives from the store are scheduled to appear in district court to address the complaint (indicating ongoing efforts to resolve the issue).  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville is replacing its old water meters with smart meters that let customers check usage and get leak alerts through a new app while the city tracks overall water use more closely. The city has replaced 26,000 of the 50,000 meters in three years and plans to finish installing smart meters for all customers in the next three to five years & hopes the app will be available soon.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • A new study finds that over 83% of 125 concussion patients who received targeted treatment with an individualized clinical profile reported being fully recovered and 85% had normal quality of life scores 1-6 years after their injury & the research supports that tailored care improves long-term recovery outcomes.  University of Arkansas
