EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U of A retired UAConnect on Aug. 8 — ending a 21-year run — and began using Workday Student as its exclusive student info system. Faculty and administrative users will have read-only access to UAConnect through summer 2026 for reporting and operations.  University of Arkansas
  • This summer U of A’s Sociology and Criminology Department hosted 10 undergraduate researchers from the University of Texas-Austin, University of Central Arkansas, University of Georgia, Drury University, Truman State University and Kansas State University to work on projects at the Terrorism Research Center and Arkansas Health Equity and Access Lab. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the 10‑week REU program focused on studying extremism, targeted violence and maternal health disparities while aiming to build lasting ties with U of A faculty and will begin recruiting for summer 2026 later this fall.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the city council voted unanimously to donate $200,000 to pay off a debt the Housing Authority had incurred from past rehab work so it could better serve low-income residents. The donation — part of $450,000 set aside for homelessness efforts — will help the authority move forward with its new leadership and a clean audit.  Fayetteville Flyer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A state board revoked Dr. Diffine’s license for five years after reviewing a 2019 video showing him behaving inappropriately with a patient and staff—board members voted 10—1 after hearing witness reports. The decision means the doctor cannot practice medicine in northeast Arkansas during this period.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Gov. Sanders urged the Insurance Commissioner to reject proposed rate hikes by Centene and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield that would raise individual health insurance premiums next year by up to 54.4% and 25.5% for more than 390,000 people under ARHOME and healthcare.gov. She called the increases illegal and argued they take advantage of low-income Arkansans — insurers say their rates match those of other companies and reflect higher costs for medical services.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
