BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Walton Family Foundation released a report on August 13th that showed startups make up 37.2% of businesses in Northwest Arkansas — beating national and state averages. UCLA economist Dr. Robert Fairlie noted that young firms under five years survived more than average and signaled a growing local business scene.  NWA Business Journal
  • The new 131-room, seven-story Moxy Fayetteville hotel at 530 W. Streamside Bend will open in September as a $33 million collaboration between Specialized Real Estate Group and Beechwood Hospitality—marking Marriott International’s debut and Arkansas’ first three-star Fitwel hotel. It is under construction in the South Yard mixed-use development and will create about 50 jobs while offering flexible room layouts, a 24/7 fitness center and complimentary cocktails at check-in.  NWA Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Huntsville man pleaded guilty in Washington County Circuit Court on Wednesday to firing a gun from a vehicle in Springdale last year—he admitted to the charge in the plea.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • A former Springdale bank employee accused of stealing money from customer accounts waived arraignment in Washington County Circuit Court on Wednesday—he was given an October court date.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fayetteville Falltoberfest will return on Sunday, Oct. 5 in the entertainment district. The free festival features live music, local food and craft beer from around 12-6 p.m.—organizers will share more details soon.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Modeling released their first new song in three years called at Variance, a track that shows a fresh sound from the band of brothers. The song is part of an upcoming EP and the band will perform at Anvil Fest on August 16—adding new energy to Fayetteville’s local music scene.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas will celebrate Panhellenic Bid Day on Saturday, August 16 at 10 a.m. at the historic Chi Omega Greek Theatre with more than 2,200 women receiving bids from 12 chapters after a week-long recruitment; the event will be livestreamed on the U of A Greek Life Facebook page—road closures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will help ensure safety on nearby streets.  University of Arkansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas is launching a pilot grant program to create a market for invasive carp & support commercial fishing by using an approved $240,000 to help remove 1.6 million pounds of the fish from the waterways, aiming to protect native species and reduce the threat to the Great Lakes. This new plan will provide subsidies to processors and encourage sustainable carp removal.  Arkansas Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • In July, 15-year-old cyclist Bailey Brown won gold in the USA Cycling Women's 15-16 Marathon Race in Roanoke, finishing 2.13 seconds ahead of her closest competitor—earning her national champion title. She now prepares as a Team USA representative while balancing training in cycling, gymnastics, and track.  5 News
