  • Walmart opened its new security and disaster operations center in Bentonville on Thursday—where meteorologists and staff tracked weather, disasters, and logistics—to help the company respond faster to emergencies.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • University of Arkansas police released an audio recording of a hoax 911 call from Monday that falsely claimed an active shooter at Mullins Library, triggering over 300 calls plus a coordinated law enforcement response as the FBI investigates the incident.  Fayetteville Flyer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fayetteville and nearby communities host a busy calendar as the Annual International Festival returns and TheatreSquared kicks off its 20th season with The Three Musketeers today at 477 W. Spring St.—tickets cost between $26 and $35—and Bentonville will host its free Passport to Adventure event on Sept. 5 themed Superhero City. Additional community events in art, theater, and music continue through Labor Day weekend.  The Free Weekly
  • The Fayetteville Public Library’s J. B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Center for Innovation offers a 6,500 square foot space where makers learn new skills with equipment like 3D printers and laser engravers—programs are free or low cost for cardholders. The center will host its fourth annual Maker Faire on Sept. 6 featuring over 40 makers and a family-friendly cosplay contest.  The Free Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Fay Jones School dedicated the Anthony Timberlands Center on August 29 in a ceremony that marked the opening of a new research facility built with Arkansas timber—designed by Grafton Architects with local Modus Studio—to help students learn design and construction for affordable housing. More than 300 people attended the event to see the new hands-on center that links classroom learning with real-world building techniques.  University of Arkansas
  • The University of Arkansas announced Friday that it used a $1 million gift from professor R. Panneer Selvam and his wife to create the Chitra and Panneer Selvam Endowed Professorship in Civil Engineering—an investment to boost research in computer modeling and support graduate students.   • Football fans are urged to arrive early and stay alert for the Razorback season opener against Alabama A&M today at 3:15 p.m. at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, where over 70,000 people are expected and university police recommend reviewing safety tips before entering the venue.  5 News
