COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Assistant professor Nur Ahmed created The Vibe Tribe to fight social isolation and held the group’s largest Speedfriending and Social Hour event on Aug. 27 at TheatreSquared with 66 participants—seating them at random tables with prompts to spark conversation. The event, which grew from 12 people at its first meeting through Fayetteville Reddit, led to new friendships and plans for future gatherings.  The Arkansas Traveler

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tyson Foods has named Devin Cole as its new chief operating officer to oversee its poultry, beef, pork, prepared foods and international segments and noted his 30 years of experience. The company said it will share more leadership updates before Sept. 28 and that Brady Stewart has departed following a code violation — Cole.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fall enrollment at UA reached a record 34,175 students—29,260 undergraduates and 4,915 graduate students—according to preliminary 11th day figures, with both undergraduate and graduate numbers setting new records for the fall semester.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • A new plan was announced on Sept 3 to grow the pool of Certified Academic Language Therapists in the state—students who finish the program can earn 12 credit hours toward a master’s degree in special education. The program aims to fill a critical gap since Arkansas currently has only 176 CALTs to help students with dyslexia.  5 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Tuesday’s Wolverine Invitational at Bella Vista Country Club, Bentonville won the men’s tournament with a team score of 280 while Fayetteville finished second at 289 — Bentonville’s women’s team also took first with a score of 246 and Grace Abbruzzese hit a hole-in-one during her round.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville volleyball dropped the first set but fought back to beat Bentonville West 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 on Tuesday night at Wolverine Arena in Centerton.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas will host a fall exhibition series at Baum-Walker Stadium from Oct. 10th to Oct. 11th against Little Rock and Dallas Baptist—offering free admission and parking with first pitch at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10th and a final game at 1 p.m. on Oct. 11th. The Razorbacks will also hold their Fall Classic on Sept. 26th at 6 p.m. at the same stadium.  5 News
  • Fayetteville junior quarterback Hank Hendrix broke school records last Friday by throwing for 471 yards and four touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 66-24 win over Cabot—earning him Athlete of the Week. The Bulldogs will play at home against the Broken Arrow Tigers this Friday as Hendrix aims to continue his strong play.  5 News
