COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ City officials and residents gathered Monday at Underwood Park as the groundbreaking began work on a new community park in northwest Fayetteville. The first phase, costing about $3.6 million and featuring a natural playground, sports courts and more, will take about a year to complete — funded by a 2019 Bond Initiative and Parks Development funds. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fayetteville police confirmed that Brandon Poulter, 42, died after shooting at officers at The Cliffs apartments around noon on Sunday—officers returned fire and his body is now headed to the state crime lab for investigation. Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Experience Fayetteville is hosting the outdoor festival Sundays on the Square on Sept. 14 to kick off Arkansas Music Week with live acts by Tristen, Stepmom and Malibu Moon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The College of Education and Health Professions partnered with the Nelms Dyslexia Center and the Academic Language Therapy Association on Sept. 3 to launch a new program that lets Arkansans earn college credit while training as Certified Academic Language Therapists. The program speeds up earning a master's in special education—cutting tuition costs and addressing the shortage of dyslexia specialists in schools. University of Arkansas
- ➤ Nicole Turner, a second-year graduate student in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at the U of A, was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Lever Tuition Fellowship—she is set to graduate in 2026 and plans to work in medical speech-language pathology. University of Arkansas

- ➤ A University of Arkansas-led team received a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study how tobacco promotions on social media affect youth addiction over the next four years. The researchers will develop AI tools to detect tobacco content and safeguard privacy — an effort aimed at protecting public health. University of Arkansas
- ➤ PJ Koopmans, a doctoral student at U of A, is using his strength training background to research how exercise may slow muscle loss in aging—he studies the molecular steps that help muscles work and adapt to exercise.
