CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 16th Fayetteville Film Fest will take place at the Fayetteville Public Library from Sept. 18–21 and will show 98 films along with live events like the Script to Screen production. Organizers say the festival will help local filmmakers share their work by bringing together local talent and visitors. The Free Weekly
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Bessie Moore Center for Economic Education has moved to the College of Education and Health Professions and named Sheri Deaton as its new director—she will develop online economic resources and hands-on programs for kindergarten through 12th grade students. University of Arkansas
- ➤ The University of Arkansas Honors College will offer a new course called 'From Fayetteville to Freedom and Back' that tells the story of Nelson Hackett, an enslaved man who ran away from Fayetteville in 1841 and whose case helped change the treatment of fugitive slaves. Taught by Michael Pierce—students will gather newspapers, maps, and court records to build a website that shares Hackett’s journey. University of Arkansas
- ➤ Arkansas universities showed strong enrollment increases, with UA-Fayetteville reaching record undergraduate numbers and UA-Little Rock marking its largest gain since 2001—Arkansas State University-Jonesboro recorded nearly 18,000 fall enrollees while SAU will launch a Bachelor of Science in emergency management next year. - ➤ Fulbright College hosted a Civil War panel at Old Main on Sept. 4—historians discussed how community studies show the many small conflicts behind the war and its lasting impact on local areas. - ➤ Residents will get their first chance to share ideas on an updated Downtown Plan during Sunday's event from noon to 4 p.m.—held at Sunday on the Square as part of Welcome Week NWA. - ➤ Bentonville senior Kavya Kurichety played her first singles match on Thursday at Memorial Park and lost 6-3, 6-3 to Fayetteville's Montse Perez in the Lady Bulldogs’ 8-6 win.
