COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Arkansas Alpha chapter of Pi Beta Phi, in partnership with Sigma Nu, will host its 20th Annual 5K Run on Parents Weekend, Oct. 18 from 8-10 a.m., starting at the Pi Beta Phi gates near Old Main Lawn and winding through Fayetteville's scenic trails. The run will benefit children’s literacy initiatives and each participant will receive a free T-shirt — a keepsake of this long-standing tradition.  University of Arkansas
  • The Soderquist family is supporting the capital campaign for the Single Parent Scholarship Fund's new headquarters in Springdale—its new Jo Soderquist Counseling Center will offer holistic support to single-parent families. The campaign aims to raise $7.4 million for land, construction, and expanded programs while having already raised over $4.95 million.  NWA Business Journal

  • Academy Bank opened its first Arkansas branch in Rogers. The 1,700-square-foot bank at 4301 S. J.B. Hunt Drive in Pinnacle Hills offers personal, business and commercial banking services and operates (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Hidalga Technologies was awarded a $304,935 NSF SBIR Phase 1 grant to develop an AI-driven platform that automates prior authorization and improves oncology workflow—CEO Joshua Upshaw will use the funding for research over the next six to 12 months while seeking early partnerships with community oncology clinics.  University of Arkansas
  • Startup Junkie’s 7th annual Startup Crawl will take place in Fayetteville on Sept. 26 with live music, local brews, and booths highlighting new local businesses & food trucks. Attendees will check in at 1 East Center Drive at 5 p.m. to pick up beer passes and swag.  Fayetteville Flyer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Taylor Brorby will hold a reading and Q&A session on Sept 25 at 6 p.m. at the Willard and Pat Walker Community Room of the Fayetteville Public Library — a free event hosted by the Department of English's M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing and Translation that will also include a book signing.  University of Arkansas
  • Little Rock rapper Baang will host the Baang and the Gaang Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Fayetteville Town Center, where local hip hop acts will perform during a free-entry show starting at 6 p.m. The festival began as a grassroots event and has grown to feature over 50 artists - a sign of strong local support.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • The Medium, a venue covering 25000 square feet in Springdale, is accepting applications for InnerSpace 2026— a program that offers free use of its Blackbox for creative projects— until 5 p.m. Oct. 8. Six projects will be chosen by a live random draw on Oct. 22 and scheduled for use from March through August, with eligibility for residents 18 and older in Benton and Washington counties.  NWA Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Devon Stubblefield, a Little Rock nurse, earned her online Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Arkansas to lead better patient care—she overcame pandemic challenges and personal loss and was honored on June 23 at a ceremony beside the Arkansas River in Maumelle.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin reversed his earlier claim and declared Fayetteville is not violating the state’s sanctuary cities law after reviewing a June 17 news release—restoring the city’s eligibility for nearly $1 million in state funding. City officials said Fayetteville must continue following state law to keep this funding.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Election officials approved the ballot for a November 18 special annexation election in Greenland—an area the city plans to incorporate to support expected growth. Voters will decide on the annexation plan in the upcoming election.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Former Arkansas Razorback golfer Stacy Lewis tees off today at Pinnacle Country Club in the NW Arkansas Championship for her 19th and final appearance — she will retire at the end of the year after a 17-year career while 144 golfers vie for a $3 million purse.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Jayvon Gilmore, a 6-6, 195-pound quarterback, has reopened his recruitment after Arkansas football decided to look for another player—he withdrew from Gaffney High School in South Carolina earlier this week while sharing playing time with another quarterback.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
