COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fayetteville will host Wooo Pig Weekend from September 26 to 28 — offering a guide to local family events and adult outings across downtown and at local venues. The lineup includes startup crawls, outdoor festivals, sports games, live music shows and a farmers market.  5 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • U of A's School of Art will host a free public fashion show on Sept. 25 from 2-4 p.m. in its Studio and Design Center lobby where Nigerian food will be served as part of a weeklong resist-dyeing workshop series led by visiting artist Peju Layiwola—student designs by Edward Osei will also be featured.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jake Dionne, an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, has earned two national publication awards from the National Communication Association for his research on the Bison Restoration Movement—he will receive his awards at the 111th annual meeting in Denver.  University of Arkansas
  • Professor Emeritus Phillip Norvell, who taught oil and gas and natural resources law for 43 years, passed away September 18 after a brief illness—his funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept 26 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville.  University of Arkansas
  • Tomorrow, Sept. 24, at 10:45 a.m., the Arkansas Integrative Metabolic Research Center will host Ryan Allen, an assistant professor at UAMS, who will present his research on a drug-responsive mouse model to study atherosclerosis—focusing on how TLR8 affects macrophage dysfunction. The seminar will also be available via Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.  University of Arkansas
  • The University of Arkansas student chapter of INFORMS earned the Magna Cum Laude award for hosting a distinguished speaker series, industry panels, networking meetings, and a hands-on workshop on Arkansas High Performance Computing during the 2024-25 academic year—advised by assistant professor Haoming Shen. The group will receive the award at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Atlanta Oct. 26-29.  University of Arkansas
  • On Sept. 11, the World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio hosted 'Navigating Graduate School and Beyond' — a panel where UA professionals shared advice on balancing coursework, teaching and career planning. Today, an informational session is held at JBHT 207 and a workshop on Sept. 29 will help graduate students prepare for the academic job search.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept.22, the Planning Commission met at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall room 219 (via Zoom). On Sept.25, the Fayetteville Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will meet on Zoom at 5 p.m. and the Youth Advisory Council will meet at 6 p.m. in City Hall room 101, while no meetings are scheduled for Sept.26.  Fayetteville Flyer

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U of A Psychological Clinic at Memorial Hall offers evidence-based mental health services for students, faculty, and staff at $15 per session—appointments are available both in-person and via telehealth to help with issues like anxiety, depression, and stress.  University of Arkansas
  • Researchers at the Arkansas Center for Food Safety found that rubbing foam hand sanitizer on hands until dry lowers viruses more than the typical 10-second rub in tests with 30 volunteers. Professor Kristen Gibson and Ph.D. student Francis Torko stress that the overall product formulation drives the sanitizer's effectiveness—rather than just its alcohol content.  University of Arkansas
