CULTURE NEWS

  • Fayetteville’s TheatreSquared will host the world debut of Jonathan Norton’s play ‘Malcolm X and Redd Foxx Washing Dishes at Jimmy’s Chicken Shack in Harlem’ tomorrow — it will run through Oct. 26. Local University of Arkansas alumni Trey Smith-Mills and Edwin Green star in the play — the production is set to tour additional theaters after its Fayetteville run.  Fayetteville Flyer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Northwest Arkansas job numbers increased by 2.7% in August—reaching 314,100 nonfarm jobs with 10,241 unemployed at a 3.2% jobless rate, the highest gain among the seven metros compared to last year.  NWA Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State officials reported that the Arkansas Educational Freedom Accounts program may cost more than $326M by June 30 and fund tuition for private and home schools. Lawmakers and critics worry the program diverts money from public schools—raising concerns amid over 51,000 applications for the 2025‑26 school year.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Northwest Arkansas Land Trust has announced the honorees for its annual Acre by Acre Celebration to be held on Oct. 16 at the Historic Ozark Mountain Smokehouse. The event — honoring Fayetteville naturalist Joe Neal as Arkansas Conservation Legend, Little Rock botanist Theo Witsell for Conservation Stewardship, and planning firm Crafton Tull as Partner of the Year — will feature live music, local craft drinks, food and a keynote address by Channel 5 Chief Meteorologist Skot Covert, with proceeds supporting a campaign to conserve 10,000 acres in the region.  Fayetteville Flyer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Samuel Ajala—a U of A graduate student and co-founder of DANI Africa—attended the United Nations High-Level Plenary Meeting at the UN headquarters to mark the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth. He said the meeting was his dream come true as he represented Nigerian youth and stressed that young people need support from older generations to lead change.  University of Arkansas
  • Anne Bartley, an activist and philanthropist who became the first woman to serve on the Arkansas governor’s cabinet, died at 81.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • A Washington County circuit judge ruled that Tontitown Mayor Angela Russell misused more than $15,000 in city funds to pay a private law firm that represented individuals in a lawsuit against Eco-Vista Landfill expansion—she is now barred from using public money for private benefits.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Washington County circuit judge ruled on Tuesday that Tontitown Mayor Angela Russell misused public funds by paying more than $15,000 to a private law firm for legal work intended for individual litigants in a lawsuit against the Eco-Vista Landfill expansion—she was ordered to stop using city money for private matters and pay $1,500 in attorney fees.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Fayetteville-based Specialized Real Estate Group announced Tuesday, Sept. 30 that it selected Cushman and Wakefield—Sage Partners to manage four local properties totaling nearly 38,000 square feet, including South Yard at 417 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The company said the new contract will provide lease administration, operations and financial oversight to support tenant businesses.  NWA Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arkansas baseball coach Bobby Petrino has taken charge in his interim role, and the team will open the season with games against Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech — and Tarleton State. Sports reporters Matt Jones and Ethan Westerman detailed his early actions on the WholeHogSports Daily Podcast while Jared Schrom from the Texas Rangers' REV Entertainment explained the schedule.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Interim Coach Bobby Petrino said the Razorbacks have nine weeks to fix both offense and defense after a 56-13 loss and firing of key defensive coaches—he expects the players to work hard for tough SEC games ahead.
