EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Social Work honors student is researching campus alcohol use and Greek affiliation by inviting graduate and undergraduate students to complete an anonymous survey—this survey gathers data on drinking habits and demographics.  University of Arkansas
  • Faculty and staff at U of A Fayetteville campus are asked to nominate part-time and hourly employees for an award recognizing outstanding service; nominations are accepted today through 5 p.m. Oct. 20—each nomination must include a support letter from a peer.  University of Arkansas
  • The Honors College Retro Readings series will offer two courses next spring—one will study presidential speeches and the other will explore Biblical texts. All honors students are welcome to join regardless of their beliefs.  University of Arkansas
  • Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects gave a $50,000 gift that created an endowed scholarship in design excellence and added $2,000 for the 2025–26 award at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design—its first recipient, Paige Savoy, was honored at the spring student ceremony. The award also offers a paid summer internship at the firm’s Fayetteville or Little Rock office.  University of Arkansas
  • University of Arkansas will host National Transfer Student Week from Oct. 20-24 to help transfer students learn and connect — the week includes events like Study Abroad 101 on Oct. 20 at the Office of Study Abroad, a Transfer Student Mixer at Ozark Bowling and a Scholarship Lab on Oct. 21, Lunch with the Vice Chancellor on Oct. 23, and a Battle of the Bands at Chi Omega Greek Theatre. Participants will have several chances to gain information and meet fellow transfer students throughout the week.  University of Arkansas
  • Professor Rebecca Gayle Howell of the U of A has been awarded the 2025 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry — an honor given by The Sewanee Review to recognize a poet’s lasting talent. She will receive the award later this month at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.  University of Arkansas
  • The University of Arkansas Global Campus is hosting its fifth virtual Better Learning Together Conference on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — the full day of panels and sessions will help educators learn new online tools, improve course design, and share teaching ideas.  University of Arkansas
  • The university will move Staff Appreciation Week and related events to May this academic year to better match the school calendar—an Employee Recognition Reception is set for October 9 to honor outstanding staff. These changes will allow staff to be celebrated at a more convenient time in the spring while continuing a tradition of recognition.  University of Arkansas
  • Lincoln Middle School students will take part in several field trips this year as the district launches its Experience Fridays program—teacher Justin Bounds explained that the approach will give kids a chance to learn outside the classroom.   • Fayetteville School Board received seven applications—six from men and one from a woman—for its vacant Zone 4 seat and will choose one candidate this month.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspectors in Washington County visited a restaurant today and found green organic debris around ice machine doors + raw chicken stored over tortillas, marking priority violations aimed at reducing foodborne illness hazards.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Assistant professor Xuan Zhuang at the University of Arkansas received a $2 million NIH grant to study how genes and diet affect the risk of metabolic diseases using fruit flies—she will feed groups of flies different diets and compare large, diverse and inbred populations to reveal hidden gene effects on traits like blood sugar levels. The research may lead to better understanding and future treatment of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes.  University of Arkansas
