  • Fayetteville has many local events scheduled from October 10 to 12 for families and adults—events include a Saturday bike ride starting in Upper Ramble, a Tequila Fest at Mount Sequoyah, live music performances, sports games and art activities at various venues.  5 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jesse Henson has over 28 years of work in the electric motors and automation field. He joined Baldor Electric in 1997 and helped merge Baldor-Reliance into ABB—he became president of ABB’s U.S. Motors and Generators division in September and advises new leaders to listen closely and lead by example.  NWA Business Journal
  • John Shaw, Garver’s chief human resources officer with nearly 30 years of experience, leads benefit programs, recruitment, learning and development, and wellness initiatives for over 1,400 employees—he stresses the importance of data-driven strategies and calm leadership to support business growth and retention.  NWA Business Journal
  • Jeremy Hudson led Specialized Real Estate Group in delivering Northwest Arkansas projects such as Stonebreaker Hotel and South Yard mixed-use district—growing his team by 17% over the past year. CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities killed a black bear in Newton County on Sunday that is believed to be the same animal which fatally attacked a Missouri man today at Sam’s Throne campground—officials will wait for DNA tests and keep the campground closed until confirmation.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ron Buescher, known as the Pickle Man, was a food science professor at the U of A who published 94 studies and co-held a patent for a turmeric dye substitute—he passed away Aug. 2 at age 82. A celebration of his life will be held Nov. 9 at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks in Fayetteville.  University of Arkansas
  • Poet Julia Kolchinsky, finalist for the Miller Williams Prize, will speak about bearing witness through poetry on Oct. 16 at Mullins Library room 217E & lunch will be provided with RSVP required by Oct. 9.  University of Arkansas
  • The Golden Tusk Award honors faculty, staff and students who excel and strengthen the U of A community—nominations can be submitted online through a simple form.  University of Arkansas
  • Alumni Bill and Pat McKamey have announced a planned $1 million gift to create an Endowed Undergraduate Teaching Support Program in Industrial Engineering at the University of Arkansas—aiming to boost support for undergraduate students by helping the department hire and train teaching assistants. The gift will enhance resources in classrooms and support student success for future engineers.  University of Arkansas
  • The Arkansas Civics Education Center offers visitors a brief course on civility—that teaches respectful public behavior amid rising national political tensions.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Since taking the role in 2021, Dr. Allison Roberts has grown the Artful Learning program at Arkansas Arts Academy to serve pre-K through 8, making it the only school in the state to fully use this method and earn Legacy School status. She said her focus on a strong mission and flexible methods helps her team blend technology with hands-on teaching—ensuring arts and creativity stay at the core of the education offered.  NWA Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas state government agencies furloughed 248 employees last week due to the federal government shutdown, a spokesperson from the Department of Shared Administrative Services confirmed on Monday.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The City Clerk Treasurer released a schedule of public meetings at City Hall from Oct. 6th to Oct. 10th that includes sessions for the Board of Adjustments, Advisory Boards, and commissions (such as active transportation and historic district) for residents to join. HEALTH NEWS

  • Students, faculty, staff and community members can register for free Youth Mental Health First Aid training sessions offered through December either on Zoom or in person to gain certification in early intervention techniques. The program, hosted by the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation — a collaborative effort with regional universities — aims to help participants address mental health and substance use challenges.  University of Arkansas
