- ➤ At Historic Cane Hill, the 'Treasured Chests' exhibit displays over 25 handcrafted 19th century furniture pieces made by enslaved and free makers—its opening on Aug. 16 featured Jerome Bias singing a historic spiritual hymn. The exhibit is free and runs until Oct. 25. The Free Weekly
- ➤ Puritan Coffee and Beer will host its annual Oktoberfest on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 2 to 10 p.m. at The Garden Room at 215 W. Dickson St.—the event will feature contests like a weenie dog costume contest, weenie dog race, Hammerschlagen, stein hoisting, live polka music, and German food and beer. Fayetteville Flyer
- ➤ The Wishing Springs Arts and Crafts Festival begins today at the gallery in Bella Vista and runs through Oct 18, offering over 40 local vendors with handmade art, live music, and demonstrations—all to benefit a nonprofit scholarship for high school arts. - ➤ Today the War Eagle Craft Fair begins at 11037 High Sky Inn Road in Hindsville with hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Oct 18 and a shorter day on Oct 19, offering over 200 exhibitors selling original handmade items and food. Established in 1954, the fair has grown after tornado recovery improvements such as a remodeled booth area and museum section that preserve its long history of artisan craftsmanship. The Free Weekly

- ➤ Assistant Professor Jake Dionne won a national teaching award for excellence in teaching, advising, and mentorship in the Communication Department. He will receive his award at the 111th annual meeting in Denver— an honor that follows several national recognitions since he joined the university in 2020. University of Arkansas
- ➤ Justin Jones, a math tutor with more than twenty years of experience, was appointed by the Fayetteville School Board to fill the Zone 4 vacancy at a special meeting on Oct. 8. Jones said his extra time and family support motivated him to serve the district—his background in tutoring and teaching will bring a needed perspective to board decisions. - ➤ U of A faculty can now register for two spring workshop series—one on best practices for mentoring graduate students and another to help new faculty network across departments; registration closes November 14 and selected participants for the Bridge Program will be notified by December 5. - ➤ David Hinton has been named associate vice chancellor for Research and Innovation at the University of Arkansas and led Tech Ventures since 2023, where he boosted technology transfer and commercialization—helping to expand partnerships and research impact. University of Arkansas
- ➤ Since 2001, Melinda Smith has led Student Services at Fay Jones School, managing curriculum, scholarships and commencement planning to help students succeed. - ➤ U of A School of Law students and alumni were honored during the Arkansas Access to Justice Month Kickoff in North Little Rock for their pro bono work—Carter Horton earned a law student scholarship for proposing a program to boost rural legal services while Gabrielle Rancifer was recognized for her extensive volunteer efforts. Other honorees, including Samantha Doss, Barbara Mariani, and Cliff McKinney, were celebrated for their service that helps ensure Arkansans have better access to the justice system. - ➤ U of A School of Art is expanding its shuttle program to help groups cover trips to Crystal Bridges and the Momentary—faculty, staff and students can reserve up to two free tickets to the Get in the Game exhibition by signing up until Oct. 31 with visits available through Dec. 31. - ➤ University of Arkansas, Fayetteville began hanging donated Ten Commandments posters on campus this week to comply with Arkansas Act 573— a state law requiring legible scriptural displays, while some faculty raised concerns about constitutional issues and sought guidance on handling student questions. - ➤ Researchers are seeking 25 non-smoking healthy adults (aged 18-39) for a paid study involving work-simulated exercise in heat with three visits totaling (6–7 hours) of testing.
