  • The Hillcrest HarvestFest 2025 Dog Show took place Oct. 4 and drew dog lovers with unusual entrants such as a judge, a hot dog, a skeleton, and a princess—an event that left a lasting impression on the community.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Huntington Bancshares is buying Cadence Bank in an all-stock deal valued at $7.4 billion to grow its presence across the South. The deal, which keeps all Cadence branches open—including 39 in Arkansas—is expected to close in the first quarter pending shareholder approval.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Bentonville-based Walmart announced three Christmas holiday sales events with Black Friday deals on Nov. 14 to 16, an online sale from Nov. 25 to 27, and a Cyber Monday sale on Dec. 1 with early access for Walmart+ members — the retailer will offer these events both in stores and online. Progress in US-China trade talks raised soybean prices in Chicago and pushed the Arkansas Index to close Monday at 950.81.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture will host homesteading trainings next month for new back-to-the-land residents at the NW Arkansas District Fairgrounds on Nov. 7 and later in Batesville at the Homesteading with Independence conference—featuring workshops on poultry, livestock, food preservation and soil health led by extension agents from five counties. Registration fees are $15 for the expo and $20 for the Batesville event.  Arkansas Times
  • U of A alumna Debbie Shearer King and her husband William donated $50,000 to the Land of Opportunity Scholarship endowment—while a doctoral student researches planetary climates and origins of life. Dr. Yizhi Sun will present research on adipose thermogenesis on Oct 29 at an AIMRC seminar and Pat Walker Health Center will hold its Stick and Treat flu vaccine clinic on Oct 31 from 12 to 3:30 p.m.—Professor Remko van Hoek received the 2025 Distinguished Service Award and First-Generation Student Week begins on Nov 8.  University of Arkansas

  • Fayetteville is hosting a variety of family-friendly events and Halloween celebrations from October 31 to November 2—featuring Trick or Treat on the Trail, live music shows, fall festivals and sports events.   • Arkansas Razorbacks lost to Florida Gators in three sets on Sunday — extending their SEC losing streak to nine games. The Hogs will face the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on the road as they try to break their winless record.  The Arkansas Traveler
