COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in Northwest Arkansas saw more people needing help when SNAP benefits were paused on November 1 due to the government shutdown; local pantries like those at St. James Missionary Baptist Church and Helping Hands reported increased visits and more calls for food drives. Officials expect it will take about three months for operations to return to normal while community groups continue to support neighbors during the holiday season.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Office of Transition Programs and Initiatives will host a celebration for first-generation graduating students on Dec. 12 in the Arkansas Union Verizon Ballroom with special remarks starting at 10:30 a.m. Students must RSVP by Dec. 5 to join the catered event offering refreshments, free swag, and photo opportunities.  University of Arkansas
  • Aranyak Goswami, an assistant professor of computational biology at the U of A System Division of Agriculture, will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 10:45 a.m. at Bell Engineering 2267 about how the gut-brain connection relates to neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, autism and schizophrenia—attendees may also join via Zoom.  University of Arkansas
  • A combined $1 million donation from the Simmons Family Foundation and the People of Simmons has established the Land of Opportunity Scholarship Endowment, a three-year campaign to boost higher education access for students in all 75 Arkansas counties. The funds will support education, art programs, and community development where team members live and work—continuing Simmons’ long commitment to the state.  University of Arkansas
  • William Corbett, the fourth candidate for dean at the School of Law, will hold an open forum on Nov 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the E.J. Ball Courtroom—he will share his five-year vision for the law school and answer campus questions.  University of Arkansas
  • The Arkansas Department of Education has released proposed changes to the Educational Freedom Account program that include a ban on team sports and a 30-day public comment period ending Dec. 16 with public hearings on Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.—lawmakers and board members are discussing adjustments to ensure the program remains focused on education.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its annual meeting on November 12, the Northwest Arkansas Council celebrated 35 years by awarding former Simmons Foods CEO Mark Simmons a lifetime membership—making him the seventh honoree—and posthumously honored founding executive director Uvalde Lindsey. The council reviewed past successes like the development of XNA and highway expansions and is planning future projects including affordable housing, an expanded wastewater strategy and a new industrial development authority to support regional growth.  NWA Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arkansas women’s soccer beat Dartmouth 1-0 at Razorback Field in Fayetteville in the first round of the NCAA tournament, scoring the lone goal in the 48th minute when (freshman forward Vailana Tu’ua) netted it after (junior forward Bella Field) sparked early pressure. The team will travel to Charlottesville to face No. 4 Washington in the second round on Thursday.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Arkansas Razorbacks (record 2 to 8) will face the No. 10 Texas Longhorns on November 22 at 3:30 p.m. EST on ABC in an SEC matchup. The team lost by a score of 23 to 22 to LSU on November 15 and will seek to improve before hosting Missouri on November 29.  4029 News
  • On November 16, Texas Tech handed the Arkansas women’s basketball team its first loss under coach Kelsi Musick by winning 80—68 in Lubbock when the Razorbacks could only cut the lead to 8 points in the fourth quarter. Coach Musick said the team faced too many turnovers and missed shots and will work to fix these issues in upcoming games.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Arkansas Razorback volleyball lost to the #19 Tennessee Volunteers Friday — marking their 13th straight loss — and they will face the #2 Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday at 12 p.m. to finish their season in SEC play.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • On Friday, the Razorbacks beat Samford 79-75 at Bud Walton Arena after a close game and strong play from key freshman guards – they will face Winthrop on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on SEC Network+.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Arkansas lost to LSU 23-22 on November 15 after squandering a 14-0 lead, deepening their eight-game skid. Interim coach Bobby Petrino said the Razorbacks will face No. 10 Texas at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday—hoping to earn their first win under his leadership.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
