COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food pantries in Northwest Arkansas have seen a rise in visits after SNAP benefits were paused in early November and with Thanksgiving coming soon. Lifesource International saw a 30% jump in demand while local students and groups are organizing drives and holiday baskets to help those in need.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Last night, Fayetteville Square hosted the 32nd annual Lights of the Ozarks when a ceremonial switch at 6 p.m. turned on 500,000 LED lights and unveiled an official 20-foot Christmas tree. The event featured local performances, an expanded pedestrian area with Santa’s Workshop and food trucks, and the lights will remain on nightly until Jan 1.  5 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville School District plans to adjust elementary attendance zones, which will affect several families at three schools — the School Board will vote on the proposal next month.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville School Board received an update on the new Woodland Junior High campus near Crossover Road and Joyce Boulevard, noting that dirt work is finished, the concrete foundation is in place, and the cafeteria is starting to be assembled—despite a ten-day delay caused by a federal shutdown hold-up. Half of the timber materials have arrived and the project, which will include a three-story school and athletic facilities, is set to finish by July.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • The University of Arkansas announced Friday that it will build a new parking garage on the north end of campus to add 1,500 student parking spaces with a planned completion in 2029. Transit and Parking Services is also considering building a 100-space parking lot east of Garland Avenue—efforts that come after a two-year study to improve campus parking and complement Razorback Transit enhancements.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Recordings for dean candidates for the School of Law have been posted online and the campus can submit feedback until Wednesday, Nov. 26. The four candidates — Oren Griffin, Emily Suski, Colin Crawford, and William Corbett — described their vision for the law school during presentations with Q&A sessions.  University of Arkansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A reader in northeast Arkansas asked if thin spots on her six-year-old maple tree's leaves were caused by insects or dicamba drift—since the tree otherwise appears healthy.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas Union Sustainability Program is giving students volunteer roles to sort food court organic waste for composting — a process that turns leftovers into fertilizer — in a bid to reduce landfill waste while working with Fayetteville’s industrial compost facility. Next school year, the program will launch a pilot initiative that lets students rent buckets to compost in their dorms.  The Arkansas Traveler

  • At a Fayetteville City Council meeting, Still on the Hill—an Ozark folk duo—sang to oppose plans to cut down an urban forest for a new Ramay Junior High campus. Thirty-nine residents spoke during the three-hour session on Tuesday as the council listened to divided opinions on the rezoning proposal.  Arkansas Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arkansas interim coach Bobby Petrino told players about the storied 1964 and 1969 games as the Razorbacks prepare to face Texas in a rivalry matchup scheduled for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central in Austin. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian recalled past contests and said his team will focus on preparation+ both sides hope to revive the historic competition.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Razorback students with Texas ties are viewing the Arkansas vs Texas rivalry in a unique way as many text about attending UT games while the UA campus cleared out for Thanksgiving break—students express mixed feelings with some loving Texas and others favoring Arkansas.
