COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fayetteville donor Jim Blair, who donated $3 million for the original library and $2 million for its 2019 expansion, died at 90. He grew up locally and served as Tyson Foods general counsel for 21 years (the library bears his family name).  4029 News

  • Cronuts Donuts will open a new shop at 1431 S. School Ave. in south Fayetteville early 2026. The third location comes after customer requests for more seating near campus.  Fayetteville Flyer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new cookbook Eat Like the Hogs: A Collection of Favorite Recipes from Razorback Greats will be for sale Monday, Dec. 8 to Friday, Dec. 12 at the McIlroy House on campus. Priced at $45, it features 250 recipes from athletes and coaches — a great gift for fans.  University of Arkansas

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lexi Applequist, a U of A biomedical engineering Ph.D. researcher and cofounder and CEO of Humimic Biosystems, has been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Science list for 2026; her work on a soft, electrically responsive biomaterial supports faster drug testing at local labs.  University of Arkansas
  • The Department of Biomedical Engineering held its first Biomed ENGAGE DESIGN showcase late last month at Springdale High School, engaging 250 high school students with displays of medical devices and research models. University students explained how biomedical engineering impacts daily life & inspired future innovators.  University of Arkansas
  • The University of Arkansas System named four finalists for the next UAMS chancellor — including interim Chancellor Dr. C. Lowry Barnes. President Jay B. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The White River Headwaters Preserve in southern Madison County was permanently protected on Dec. 4 using funds from federal and local partners, and planning is underway to open the 769-acre site for public recreation and research.  NWA Business Journal
  • A University of Arkansas team found that buckeye butterflies in local prairies change their eye genes with the seasons (study conducted 2018-2021). Darker fall butterflies bask more, and researchers (who collected samples from Woolsey, Chesney and Stump prairies) will study if temperature or light drives these changes.  University of Arkansas

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators and chief innovation officers from six states, including Arkansas, have formed a new bipartisan caucus to shape AI policies that will prepare students, workers and small businesses for future opportunities.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • City officials are asking residents to share feedback on redesigning the School Avenue corridor for safety and traffic flow — plans include wider sidewalks and space for walking, biking, and transit. An open house runs 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Rock Street Annex; online comments open at noon.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Clinic delivered its first baby through its new hospital-based midwifery program in partnership with Willow Creek Women’s Hospital and Northwest Health. The program currently serves at Willow Creek in Johnson and will offer future births at Siloam Springs Regional Hospital.  NWA Business Journal
  • The local Dance for Parkinson’s program helps participants improve their movement and connect socially through weekly exercise classes in Fayetteville. The program supports physical health by offering a unique blend of fun and activity.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • The Razorbacks beat Louisville 89-80 on Dec. 3 at Bud Walton Arena. Trevon Brazile led with 21 points as the team advanced its NCAA Tournament resume and prepares to face Fresno State on Saturday, Dec. 6 in North Little Rock.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Ryan Silverfield begins his tenure as head coach with a celebration today at the University of Arkansas campus. Fans gathered to welcome him and mark a fresh start for the Razorbacks & local college sports.  5 News
  • Arkansas women's basketball lost 78-63 to SMU on Thursday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas during the ACC/SEC Challenge. The Razorbacks trailed most of the game and will try to bounce back against Jackson State on Sunday at Walton Arena.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
