COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fayetteville will celebrate the expanded YRCC with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. on Dec. 17 at 240 E. Rock St. and after the event Mayor Molly Rawn and YRCC Director Joshua Lainfiesta will lead guided tours—parking is limited on site.  City of Fayetteville
  • Local groups are hosting a holiday toy and winter coat drive for underserved kids until Dec. 22. Donations can be dropped off during regular hours at Wood Stone Pizza uptown (3619 N. Mall Ave) or downtown (557 S. School Ave).  Fayetteville Flyer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The first Fuego Tortilla Grill outside Texas will open Dec. 16 at 2190 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd — set to be open 24 hours from Tuesday through Sunday — and create about 50 new jobs in Fayetteville. A grand opening is planned for Jan. 13.  NWA Business Journal
  • A new restaurant called Handshake opened Monday on the first floor of Fayetteville Public Library, serving bagels, sandwiches, and salads. Owner Hope Ray said the venue will unite neighbors through good food & local events & art nights.  4029 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fayetteville Festivus will take place Friday, Dec. 12, from 5-9 p.m. in the square during Lights of the Ozarks and is a free event that features holiday movie screenings (Elf and The Nightmare before Christmas), a holiday market with handmade goods by young vendors, games, and live music.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • AMC Fiesta Square 12 closed on Tuesday, Dec. 9 because plumbing issues required immediate repairs in Fayetteville. The theater is expected to reopen once maintenance is complete.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College students are managing finals stress by studying in coffee shops and taking outdoor breaks to recharge. The Pat Walker Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services offers a relaxation room & group activities Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to support mental wellness.  The Arkansas Traveler
  • Jessica Culver, an Ozark High School teacher and doctoral student at U of A, was named National Council for Social Studies Teacher of the Year at a Dec. 5 conference in Washington (she has taught for 23 years) and is set to complete her doctorate next May.  University of Arkansas
