BUSINESS NEWS

  • Handshake officially opened on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the library’s southeast cafe space, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner options. It operates Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.—serving local visitors, families and downtown workers.  Fayetteville Flyer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alison Krauss and Union Station and Jerry Douglas will perform at Momentary on May 3, 2026 — joining opener Theo Lawrence as they tour in support of their new album Arcadia. Ticket sales begin on Dec. 10 for Momentary members and on Dec. 12 for the public.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayetteville High School students will build cardboard shelters and sleep outdoors on Thursday, Dec. 11 on campus to better understand homelessness while raising funds for the Families in Transition program + school leaders will climb a crane tower if donations reach $25,000.  Fayetteville Flyer
  • Graduate Students in English at U of A invite paper proposals and creative submissions on Transformation for an upcoming interdisciplinary conference and writing contest. Abstracts must be sent by Jan. 12 to the provided email (the event is free for current undergrads, grad students, and faculty).  University of Arkansas
  • On Nov. 21, Dr. Erika Almenara, director of the Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies program at U of A, received the Hoyt Purvis Award for Leadership in International Education at the annual banquet during International Education Week, recognizing her decade of dedication to expanding mutual understanding.  University of Arkansas
  • The December Short Talks from the Hill podcast features U of A assistant professor Aranyak Goswami, who discusses computational biology and AI in agricultural research. His talk is now available for listeners after he joined the Division of Agriculture last year from Yale and Stanford.  University of Arkansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Office for Sustainability is hosting its bi-annual Bicycle Roundup this week to collect unwanted bikes for the campus Bicycle Library. Residents can drop off bikes at 238 N. Harmon Ave. during office hours (9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or arrange an on-campus pickup via email.  University of Arkansas

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Arkansas conducted a Health Survey that shows 38.9% of adult Arkansans are obese and 99 rural census tracts have rates of 45% or more. Public health and community leaders will use the detailed data to plan obesity interventions and launch interactive online maps in early-2026.  University of Arkansas

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Arkansas offensive line coach Eric Mateos is expected to join Wisconsin as their offensive line coach after two seasons with the Razorbacks and roles at Baylor, BYU, and Texas State (according to WholeHogSports).  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville football saw six players sign college letters-of-intent Wednesday morning at Bulldog Arena (Fayetteville High) with key signees including Brody Jones for Missouri, Matt Heckman for Army, and Catavion Taylor for Central Arkansas; 15 other athletes signed for different sports.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
