CRIME NEWS

  • On July 11, David Osorio-Piedra pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, evidence tampering, and aggravated assault for his role in a fight that led to McAway’s death in 2023—he received a 42-year prison sentence.  5 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local producer Chris Moore of East Hall Recording is marking 20 years with a show at George’s Majestic Lounge on July 20 that will feature local bands he has recorded over the years. The studio is fighting a highway expansion that will take its land — Moore says the compensation offered is too low to rebuild his setup.  Fayetteville Flyer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Juan Balda was honored with the IEEE Power & Energy Society Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award for his work on custom power technologies at the U of A. He will be recognized in Austin from July 27-31 — where he will receive a medal and plaque.  University of Arkansas
  • Sharandeep Singh Chahal, a U of A doctoral student in horticulture, is studying turfgrass diseases that damage zoysiagrass on lawns, athletic fields and golf courses — his research on Yellow Tuft and Large Patch aims to improve sustainable turf care practices. He said his work will help reduce chemical use and guide field managers in keeping turf healthy.  University of Arkansas

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fayetteville city officials today proposed replacing the current bin system with larger carts equipped with anti-contamination features — environmental director Peter Nierengarten said the new trucks will detect contamination and notify residents. The proposal will be discussed at Tuesday night's council meeting.  4029 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin spoke Friday at a Little Rock corrections conference and urged Congress to pass the Cell Phone Jamming Reform Act to let states block illegal cell phone use in prisons, noting that 230 inmate gang leaders used these devices to run crimes. Sen. Tom Cotton supports the measure and officials say the technology can target only inmate phones+ help stop escapes and other criminal acts.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Fayetteville Mayor Molly Rawn sponsored a resolution that would let the city council allocate up to $450,000 from the general fund to support programs for the unhoused. The resolution—listed on the consent agenda for the July 15 meeting—requires that city staff present proposals for council members to approve individually.  5 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • United Airlines announced nonstop flights from Northwest Arkansas National Airport for select Razorback games this season — the schedule includes a flight on Nov. 15 from XNA to Baton Rouge for Arkansas vs. LSU and another on Nov. 22 from XNA to Austin for Arkansas vs. Texas. Additional flights feature a Sept. 27 service from Newark to XNA for a home game and larger planes on Oct. 18 from Houston to XNA for the Texas A&M matchup.  5 News
